Disposable tanks are recyclable - what's the problem?
There are two BIG problems with disposable propane tanks.
Discarded tanks frequently contain measurable amounts of liquid propane which makes them hazardous when collected as trash. Compacting a propane tank in a garbage truck or trash compactor can cause explosions and/or fires that lead to injuries and expensive equipment damage. That’s why they are classified as hazardous waste which makes them expensive to recycle.
In addition, they are frequently discarded at campgrounds and parks that end up paying for their collection, transportation, and disposal. Our parks should not have to absorb the expense of recycling disposable propane tanks.
How much does it cost to recycle a dark green propane tank?
More than they cost to purchase most of the time. The proper way to recycle the tank is to evacuate any unused liquid propane so the tank can be safely punctured. It’s a time-consuming process than involves hazardous manual labor.
Why are disposable tanks so cheap if they cost so much to recycle?
That’s a great question. The true cost of a disposable tank isn’t paid at the time of purchase. It can ultimately be more expensive for a park to recover and recycle than it is to buy. We believe that the actual cost of a disposable tank should be paid up front, either by the manufacturer or the consumer. That’s how our program works – the end user pays for the cost of using a safe container instead of passing along the cost of a disposable tank.
Who pays to recycle Little Kamper tanks?
Our program covers the cost of retiring and recycling Little Kamper tanks when they reach the end of their service period or if they fail to pass our safety testing. We recover all unused liquid propane before the tanks are retired and we recycle our own tanks.
How does the Little Kamper help reduce waste?
That’s an important question. Every Little Kamper exchange equals one less tank thrown away. The Little Kamper exchange program brings our cylinders back through our retailers to our production center for inspection, cleaning, and refilling. Each new customer using our exchange will reduce the number of tanks thrown away by the number of times they come back for a refilled tank!
